Mike Clague Published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal with Dr. Ava Shamban (dermatologist, Beverly Hills USA).
So what was new about our clinical publication?

For a long time cosmetic injectors have used markings before they inject cheek fillers. Markings are used to help guide the injector as to where the filler should be located for the best aesthetic outcome.
The lines that have been used for many years are called ‘Hinderer’s Lines’.
Ava and I felt that Hinderer’s lines were old, clumsy and resulted in this phenomenon we see globally “BIG CHEEKS” that push forwards rather than to the side.
I was lucky enough to be contoured once about 10 years ago by Rae Morriss. Rae is a very talented, globally respected make-up artist. She contoured my cheeks using make-up artists markings. I had never seen these, even though I had created the first lot of training materials on cheeks when I worked at Allergan (with Dr Steven Liew and Assoc Prof Goodman).

I then started using make-up artists contour lines to inject my dermal fillers. Resulting in a beautiful contour for my patients.
Dr Ava and I decided to publish this technique in order to challenge the current marking out and injecting of cheek fillers.
By using make-up artists cheek contour lines you get a beautiful result. Much better than using Hinderer’s lines in our opinion.

As cosmetic injectors, we are medical aesthetic artists. Dr Shamban and I believe there is a lot we can learn from make-up artists. Both of us have now done basic contouring courses with make-up. We published this paper to revolutionise the way doctors and nurses think about make-up contour lines. We believe understanding contour lines leads to more artistic, beautiful cheek outcomes.
